 4. The Löwenberg Palace

Let’s go back to the centre of town and have a look at the Löwenberg Palace, a patrician’s house from the 18th Century where the respected family Bender lived. Many important people came out of this family: many of the city’s dignitaries, a court chaplain of Emperor Josef I, and an abbot of St. Blasien who was appointed by the prince. The most important was Columbanus von Bender. He received highest military honours as field marshal under Josef II. Even today he’s celebrated as the saviour of Luxembourg where he built and defended the Kasematten. The Löwenberg Palace is a museum today. It was the last home of Otto Ernst Sutter, the honorary citizen and writer who loved his homeland.
